Phrazes For The Young - The 'debut' by Julian Casablancas
A prelude to the new album by The Strokes?
Some years ago an old friend put my hands on the Is This It (RCA, 2001), which debut album with the New York group The Strokes: "listen to what may be one of the best albums of this year," he said.
And I was wrong ...
It was during the early stages of this new millennium. There were several groups named 'The ...' (Hives, White Stripes, etc.).. Julian Casablancas, lead singer songwriter and the Strokes, used to wear long hair and leather jacket, and seemed to be on everyone's lips ... at least of the female audience.
Soon after come the Room Of Fire (RCA, 2003), which did nothing but confirm the high quality of speaking all prestigious music magazines.
The effort of the band members for giving the best of itself was impressive, especially live: the people who attended one of three South American shows in 2005 will not let me lie.
From there they ended up losing the track. I heard a couple of songs from his next job, which could be seen as a kind of departure from the style developed until then ... partly influenced by the change of producer (David Kahne Gordon Raphael), and I caused the same 'good 'impression.
Suddenly, after he appeared to have passed another thousand years, the theme "11th dimension" makes its foray into the network: once an idea came to mind for many ... "" Casablanca + synthesizers? "... Part of an equation somewhat inconsistent but exciting at the same time.
The rhythm, the encouraging phrase "your faith has to be greater than your fear," and the 'sticky' that was the chorus gave indications that something interesting was coming, a first approach to the solo debut was preceded by Casablancas a couple of notable collaborations with other artists.
”, el título que da inicio a este álbum debut, bien podría estar a la altura de lo hecho en el Is This It . And of course, the rest of Praz For The Young (Rough Trade, 2009) was as interesting as expected: "out of the blue", the title that kicks off this debut album could well be up to the fact in Is This It.
Hear is almost a catharsis. It has that atmosphere of mystery and revelation equipped at the same time, and probably well deserving of being the protagonist of any review of the disc.
But despite the similarities do not we have a song by the Strokes, and is therefore at the same time makes a distinction between it and what comes next.
Continuous away from the sound of guitars, Casablancas develops their ideas and creativity in intervals of five minutes (that's what last about all subjects) and opposite-laden melodies achievement ... and those shaping synthesizers and rhythm to the chorus: a mixture of 'curiosity and extension' repeated incessantly throughout the album.
That 'curiosity and extension' at the time of writing might have ended in a group of poor ideas and musical styles, but again, his smooth vocal maintained to be the theme of the whole.
For The Young Phrazes has only 8 songs, but each trip is an attractive 300 seconds long.
Casablancas has met all his talent and musical diversity here: from soul and country to a raw rock guitars and synth-pop , For The Young Phrazes us on a continuous, non-stop flight through the mind of its creator.
The first time I heard the entire disc may be overlooked is how different, for example, "left & right in the dark" to "river of brakelights" (reminiscent at times to Muse, and could be seen as the only title is out of context.)
And is there much to discover in him that escapes us at first, since this remarkable pace almost religious in "tourist" to that strange, calm principle of "Ludow st." Which precedes the style 'country-baladístico' in which it develops.
Nobody knows what comes next. hace algunas semanas: In its official website reads that the new work of the Strokes is expected for 2010, which already have the songs recorded (about 20) but not decide which would end up in it ... or so Casablancas said some weeks ago:
There is disagreement about what songs are ready to include in the album ... some members of the band opt for one and the rest for other ... I'm more or less in the middle of the whole discussion.
For The Young Phrazes has earned mixed reviews, but mostly positive: some people say that only the first three tracks are good and the rest not worth it, others say except "river of brakelights", the disc is everything you could expect from the creative mind of Casablancas.
As always, love it or hate it is simply a matter of taste.
I've missed hearing it more than once to catch him taste.
Give it a try: just $ 4.99 via iTunes to listen to an interesting work that serves as a prelude to the new and highly anticipated album of the Strokes.

The truth is that the album is quite diverse, with influences ranging from folk and gospel to the Strokes themselves. In my blog I do a corrections, although not as deep as this.
